Grade Four Education Program dates:
April 16th – June 8th
Overall Expectations:
Use living skills to address personal safety and injury prevention.
Personal Safety and Injury Prevention:
Apply decision-making and problem-solving skills in addressing threats to personal safety (e.g., from abuse or physical fighting) and injury prevention (e.g., bicycle safety, road safety);
Identify people (e.g., parents, guardians, neighbors, teachers) and community agencies (e.g. Kids’ Help Phone) that can assist with injury prevention, emergency situations, and violence prevention
Bicycle Safety (bikes used), Block Parent Sign, Bicycle Helmets
Upon completion of the classroom instruction the class will watch the video on bike safety. The children will then practice safe bicycle riding throughout the Village.
Outdoor activities will take place in all weather, unless it is extreme or cancelled by the school.
Smoke Alarms, Escape Planning, Kitchen Safety, Electrical Safety, Burns/Scalds and What to do
The Fire program will be based upon the Risk Watch curriculum. The class will identify and remove all of the hazards from the “Hazard House”. When finished the "Hazard House" will become a safe house.
The children will then tour Sparky’s apartment where they are taught kitchen and bathroom safety. Sparky’s bedroom is equipped with a non-toxic “smoke machine” which demonstrates to the students how smoke would fill a room. The children experience how to check doors for heat by touching the door with the back of their hand. The door is warm to touch and they then exit through the bedroom window. When everyone is out safely, they discuss calling 911 from a neighbor's house.
